Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site that features videos and comments on the representations of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. She is the creator and director of executive for Feminist Frequency which is an education, non-profit website that explores representations of women in popular culture narratives. In her efforts to dispel the myths associated with women in pop culture, she seeks to bring attention to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of people in the online space. Sarkeesian who has an MA in Political and Social Thought in the field of social and political thought from York University, is a popular public speakers. She has given speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. From an early age she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency website. As of 2009, this ambitious young woman was slammed online for launching a website series on gender in videogames. However, the attacks did not dissuade her. It only strengthened her in her role as a feminist journalist. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminist have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit explores the portrayals of women in contemporary pop culture.
